With all indoor plants, in order for them to survive, conditions similar to their natural environment need to be reconstructed - within reason. As far as natural environments go, you will find that plants do not grow in the dark. There is a myth that by testing the backup systems components on by one will provide insight on the quality of the system and its ability to support unplanned downtime. There is also a belief that examining the systems engine will provide adequate evidence to the system functioning properly. However, these do not stand the test and managers most of the times find that they are unable to handle the untimely loss of power supply. The backup system malfunctions and they cannot bail the plant out of this messy situation. The backup system usually consists of a number of components like ventilation, cabling, switchgear, fuel system and other stuff which are manufactured and assembled for the system to function. Thus, examining the components separately will not help in finding out the condition of the system. It is important to examine the system as a whole to find out the flaws that prevent the machine from performing optimally.
There's about 6 or 8 disaster scenarios that I can think of that seem likely to happen at some time. Most of them seem unlikely to happen in my lifetime. But you never know. Isn't it prudent to be prepared, at least to some extent, in the event the normal food supply is interrupted? Examples of disasters that seem likely to happen are an asteroid hitting the earth, a massive nuclear war, a global epidemic, and the failure of one or two major crops such as corn and wheat due to a widespread disease or climate change.
